The New Parent Diapering Checklist: Everything You Need for Change Time

By TinyHappyFaces Team·2026-08-12·4 min read

A new baby means approximately 2,500 diaper changes in the first year alone. Having the right supplies on hand makes every change faster, cleaner, and less stressful for both you and your baby. Here is your complete diapering checklist.

The Essentials

1. Diapers

The foundation of every change. Plant-based diapers offer leakproof protection while being gentler on the environment than traditional options. Stock multiple sizes — babies grow faster than you expect, and a too-small diaper leads to leaks.

For environmentally conscious parents, organic cotton reusable cloth diapers with 6-layer absorbent construction provide a waste-free alternative. Modern cloth diapers are nothing like the flat folds of previous generations — they feature adjustable snaps, waterproof outer layers, and stay-dry interiors.

2. Baby Wipes

Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free wipes are the safest choice for newborn skin. Babies have sensitive skin that can react to fragrances, alcohol, and harsh preservatives. Look for wipes specifically labeled hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.

Buy in bulk — you will go through 200+ wipes per week in the early months. A 200-count pack lasts about a week; a 400-count pack gives you breathing room.

3. Diaper Rash Cream

Even with the most diligent changing routine, diaper rash happens. A zinc oxide-based cream creates a protective barrier on the skin and treats existing rash. Pediatrician-recommended, fragrance-free formulas are safe for daily use.

Apply a thin layer at every change when rash is present, or use preventively overnight when longer stretches between changes are expected.

4. Diaper Pail

A good diaper pail contains odors so your nursery stays fresh. Look for an odor-locking design with a sealed lid. A 4.5-gallon capacity holds about 3-4 days of newborn diapers, meaning fewer trips to empty it.

Optional but Helpful

Changing Pad

A waterproof changing pad protects surfaces and gives you a dedicated changing spot. Portable versions are useful for on-the-go changes.

Wipe Warmer

Not essential, but some babies startle at cold wipes. A warmer can make nighttime changes calmer.
